About This Site

Here are some comments about site policy and administration

Site Manager

This site is maintained by Peter Bowditch. His email address for correspondence about this site is .

Mr Bowditch is the Executive Officer of the Australian Council Against Health Fraud Inc. He is also the Chief Executive Officer of Gebesse Computer Consultants.

Email republication policy

Much of the content of this site is opinion, and if it does not match yours then that is too bad. The policy here is to reproduce any critical emails sent to any email address associated with the site manager, the ACAHF or this site, and also to reproduce any critical discussion which appears in mailing lists, Usenet newsgroups or any other outlets in any form of media. The solution is simple for anyone who does not want to see their words published here - be quiet.

Complaints -what we do about them

How complaints are handled depends on the nature of the complaint. Anonymous complaints are ridiculed, laughed at, mocked, published on this site and otherwise ignored. Complaints from real people are read, filed, published on this site and ignored unless evidence is offered of inaccuracy in something appearing on the site. Letters from lawyers are photocopied, read, filed, published on this site and ignored, again unless evidence is offered of inaccuracy in something appearing on the site. Details of Cease & Desist orders or any other requests by lawyers for the removal of content from this site are submitted to the Chilling Effect Clearinghouse.

ACAHF has no desire to publish inaccuracies, but unless it can be demonstrated that something is clearly in error material will only be removed from this site upon the direct instructions of a court having proper and enforceable jurisdiction. Please note that it is the policy of Australian Council Against Health Fraud Inc to NEVER settle out of court, and any legal action will be given wide and embarrassing publicity. Do not threaten legal action in the hope of getting a reaction favourable to you in advance of court proceedings or you will be disappointed.

People who want to waste their time complaining to government regulatory authorities about this site should contact the Australian Broadcasting Authority. Details can be found under the heading "Online services content regulation".

Anonymous Liars

The use of anonymising services to send email tells us three things about the senders. The first is that they are prepared to lie, because they are already indisputably lying about their names. The second is that whatever they have to say is worthless, because they do not even believe in it enough themselves to put their names to it. The third is that, because it is impossible to reply to the messages, they show that they are frightened of engaging in debate. This doesn't mean that people cannot write from Hotmail, for example, but only applies to anomymiser services. ACAHF reserves the right to ignore anonymous correspondence.

The Technology

Several pieces of software are used to manage and maintain this site.

  • Microsoft FrontPage 2003 is used for overall site management and editing individual pages. No FrontPage server extensions are used, and where any server-end functions are required they are written in Perl.
  • An Access 2003 database holds some information about variable content in the site such as the book shop pages. This data base is not on the web server and is used in conjunction with FrontPage to maintain certain pages on a regular basis.
  • Ipswitch WS_FTP Pro is used to transfer the pages to the server. This program allows both transfer of single pages and a semi-automated process that transfers all changed pages in a batch.
  • The editor used for Perl programming is "Programmer's File Editor" by Alan Phillips.
  • The site search system is based on the Fluid Dynamics Search Engine.
  • The software for displaying recently changed pages on this site was written by Jason Anthony.
  • Style sheets are maintained with TopStyle Pro.
  • Image processing is done with Paint Shop Pro.
  • Link checking is done using Xenu's Link Sleuth.
  • Some of the JavaScript routines used on this site come from The JavaScript Source and JavaScript Kit.
  • WebPosition Gold runs on a regular basis to automatically push the site into the most important search engines.

Privacy Policy

The only information about visitors to this site which is examined or kept is that which is provided voluntarily by someone sending email to the site owner or by filling out a form for donation, membership or other purposes.

ACAHF will not sell or provide any details obtained through this site or through any other of the organisation's activities to anyone unless ordered to do so by a properly constituted court with appropriate jurisdiction. Email addresses will never be used to solicit donations, although they may be used to promote ACAHF activities. Recipients who are not members of ACAHF will always be given the opportunity to refuse further communication of this kind.

The only time web server logs are looked at is when it is necessary to do so to solve site management problems. The traffic recorded in the logs is not analysed in any way except to produce consolidated statistics such as numbers of visitors and page displays.

Medical Advice

The manager of this site is not a medical doctor, and there is no medical advice on this site. If you are sick or think you are sick, you should see a doctor. That means a real doctor, not someone who pretends to be a doctor. The only advice of a medical nature here is in the form of warnings against liars, charlatans, quacks, thieves and other vermin who claim to have cures for things for which there is no cure, treatments for non-existent ailments, or medical advice, products and treatments which have no scientific (or in many cases logical) validity. The information provided on this is designed to support, not replace, the relationship that exists between patients or site visitors and their physicians.
